Coastal Corps

..it's about our beaches
combining community beaches and local people to promote awareness and volunteer participation in sustainability while ensuring a legacy of clean beaches for all generations to come.

..it's about thinking globally and acting locally
at the Clean Beaches Council, we envision a global movement to protect earth's pristine coastal regions and promote sustainable beach and coastal use between humans and the environment.

..it's about you
We can't do it without you. Our Coastal Corps depends on people like you: people living in or visiting coastal communities, working with local governments, and members of local organizations to help us promote sustainable beach use.

You don't need to have any special skills or fitness. Everyone can take part and there are no age limits whatsoever. And, best of all, the time spent volunteering is time you already spend at the beach!

About Coastal Corps

Coastal Corps is a national volunteer service initiative aimed at preserving America's coastal heritage. Similar to the President's Physical Fitness Awards started by President Dwight Eisenhower, Coastal Corps allows community organizations to recognize the efforts of volunteers in coastal areas for their outstanding community service and to encourage more volunteer service by all.

Coastal Corps has three primary objectives:
  • Promote volunteer activities that enhance the livability of coastal communities;
  • Inform and engage the local business community in sustainability projects; and
  • Honor communities and individuals that demonstrate a commitment to sustainable volunteer service.

The Coastal Corps is a way to get involved at your favorite local beach. Communities all over the country are participating. Some sample volunteer projects range are:

Getting Started

For many of us, the beach is a special place. For some it is a place of solitude and reflection, for others it is where we go to recreate - to swim, run, paddle, surf... Whatever the reason, we value the beach and cherish our ability to enjoy it. We care, it's a part of our coastal stewardship, and it's our coastal legacy.

The Coastal Corps program works because it is a community-based effort. The people who participate are members of local civic groups, environmental organizations, school groups, teachers, and even your neighbors. They participate in the Coatal Corps because they care about what happens in their own "backyards." And, they make up the most vital group in the Coastal Corps - because nobody cares about your beaches like you do.
